For those who are attempting to lose unwanted pounds, a new study is showing that almost any and every movement plays an important part in success or failure. A new study shows that micro-bursts of activity at any point in the day can make significant impact to overall weight-loss goals.
The study was published in a recent release of the American Journal of Health Promotion at the University of Utah, where researchers found that even the most brief of physical activity at high intensity can work as well as even a 10-minute workouts. That makes items like carrying laundry upstairs or playing with a spry dog for short bursts could be positively effecting health.
“What we learned is that for preventing weight gain, the intensity of the activity matters more than duration,” says researcher Jessie X. Fan, professor of family and consumer studies. “Knowing that even short bouts of ‘brisk’ activity can add up to a positive effect is an encouraging message for promoting better health.”
The researchers utilized data collected from 4,500 individuals who initially participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Within that initial survey, participants used accelerometers for a full week. Each activity was captured in relation to its physical health progression. Researchers then compared measurements of physical activity based upon the length of time, as well as overall intensity.
High-intensity bouts (those over 10 minutes), higher-intensity (less than 10 minutes) lowintensity long bouts (more than 10 minutes with lower counts per minute), and low intensity were all measured as precisely as possible.
In the tallies, higher-intensity did just as good a job of dropping BMI levels as the high-intensity of over ten minutes. The finding points to the idea that the body is jolted into a state of activity that burns calories. Of course, working out longer would still maintain an overall effect of more weight lost, but the idea of mandatory sustaining of high-intensity activity now seems to be a false assumption.
