Learn how to build Drone in K-12 Classroom with Drone in Schools program

If you have to name one technology that has in recent years found a place for itself in almost every field, its drones. It can be as much a life-saving tool and as a recreational gadget. In the UAE, it’s a popular tool in the hands of the police, the civil defense, the coast guard, as well as the photographers and videographers who have made this city their home.

Kitspire FZE, a UAE start-up located in SAIF Zone, believes that this is the right time to give the power of designing and creating drones into the hands of students. Development of this innovative program, Drone In Schools, lets students experience and explore new ways to understand drones as well as steer them towards a potential career. Through the Drone In Schools program, K12 schools can introduce drones in learning coding, designing, building and piloting.

Kitspire FZE has developed their own DIY drone kits where students can assemble, build and fly their own drones. Online learning portal on drones and applications for coding and piloting are also available, which will make learning technology fun for students.

What’s the project all about?

The Drone In Schools program is a two-phase STEM activity project focused on students of age group 8-18.

Drone In Schools invites schools to register for participating in workshops and challenges wherein teams of coders, engineers and technologists attend the workshop in learning about drones and finally use the tools to develop and implement for practical application.

Career scope for students

Drone In Schools will expose students to potential jobs in the ever-growing drone industry and a broader career in aviation. Besides becoming a pilot, job opportunities are immense in the field of programming, design, engineering, mechanics and data analysis.

Companies such as Amazon and UPS are already spending millions for autonomous drone package deliveries. Public safety organizations and industries such as agriculture, construction, entertainment, and oil and gas have also upped their use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

How to participate?

Students should first participate in the workshops. Post workshop, students should form a group comprising of a coder, engineer, and technologist, and finally register for the challenge.

Will there be training?

During the workshop, students will receive hands-on training from experts to develop foundational skills in aeronautics, coding, and problem solving. Each participating team will get to build and fly their own drones during the workshop.

All resources needed to work on the project, such as 3D printers, drones, designing tools, and other accessories will be provided.

Phase I – DIS: Workshop

A one-week Hands-on training to develop foundation skills in aeronautics, coding and problem-solving.

Phase II – DIS: Challenge

An opportunity to participate in an exciting challenge that is scheduled to be held in April 2020.

UAE education institutions join Drone In School’s program

This January, Innoventures Education Group became the pioneer in introducing a one-week Drone In Schools program into all of its group of schools in the UAE. “Innoventures Education fosters an environment that engages and inspires students to apply their learning to real life situations. Introduction to Drones as an innovative and interactive tool, encouraged our young students to pick up digital skills that will be useful for the future”. Raffles World Academy’s Primary and High School students have mastered the art of designing, coding, and flying drones as they learn the conceptual physics of how drones work, analyzing different parts and how to design and assemble. “It was wonderful to see creativity and technology harnessed to such good effect as our students, designed, constructed and flew their drones through an obstacle course. It was particularly pleasing to see so many girls taking part in a technology activity,” said Timothy Roberts, Principal, Raffles World Academy.

Raffles International School is now planning to integrate the program with the classroom curriculum and will be one of the first in the region to implement drone programs in classrooms. “We are only just beginning to explore the potential drones and UAVs have in commercial, scientific and recreational fields. I am delighted RIS is at the forefront of integrating this technology into the school curriculum and providing our students with the opportunity to develop this potential themselves,” said Tim Richardson, Principal, Raffles International School.
