We’ve all seen the power of a crown. A sparkling tiara can transport a young girl from her bedroom to her fairy dream castle in an instant. And it’s this magic that inspired entrepreneur Kelly Massad to launch the first and only Princess Subscription Box service.
Based in Toronto, Canada, Kelly was working at a Kindergarten when the idea struck her like a blast from a magic wand. “Four-year-olds are wildly imaginative and I noticed how interested the little girls were in all things princess, glitter and hair braiding. One day one of the girls wore a small tiara to school, which prompted all the other girls to want a turn. All day the girls passed this tiny tiara around and took turns being their own kind of princess. As I watched each girl try the tiara and saw their faces light up in awe as they all ran to the bathroom mirror to see how it looked, I was amazed at how one small hair accessory ignited so much imagination, confidence and excitement.”
Kelly was just 21 at the time, but that didn’t stop her from starting her dream business. With just 500 dollars start-up capital, she taught herself how to build a website, created her own business model and started marketing her product – The Petite Princess Box.
Subscribers to The Petite Princess Box receive a monthly princess themed boxes that includes 4 princess themed accessories and unique items for all ages – although 3-6-year-olds are the core audience. Each month, the box has a new theme and with themes like the Mermaid Princess Box, the Vintage Tea Party Box and the Pumpkin Patch Princess Box, there’s no end to the excitement and surprise when little princesses see their treasures for the first time!
As the only princess subscription box currently on the market, Kelly is determined to make The Petite Princess Box a unique and quality experience for her customers. “Our box is unique in that it not only provides high quality accessories and unique items at a pretty affordable price, but more importantly provides a rare bonding experience and imaginative play all in one box.”
The Petite Princess Box encourages parent and child bonding through imaginative play. Each box includes mini fairy-tale story cards based on the monthly theme so that parents or grandparents can take part in the story. For Mother’s Day, the Queen and Me: Spa Box allowed moms and daughters to create their own mini princess spa experience at home using a range of sparkly and magical pampering products.
As a start-up owner, Kelly understands all too well what it takes to get your own brand off the ground, so she makes a point of sourcing most of her products including handmade items such as hair accessories, jewellery and cosmetics from other small businesses.
“It didn’t happen overnight for me,” she said, “I took the time to learn as I went and after two and a half years, I started to see some profits, which I invested in rebranding and marketing. Since then the business has really taken off.”
But for Kelly, it’s being the fairy godmother that allows so many princess dreams to come true, that really makes her feel like a success. “I created the Petite Princess Box to bring a sense of joy, magic and excitement to family’s lives and when I see my subscribers enjoying their boxes, I know I’ve reached my ultimate goal. I receive so many emails from my subscribers with beautiful photos of their petite princesses enjoying their boxes, wearing their accessories and playing with their parents. It truly makes my heart happy and takes me back to my own childhood of magic and wonder.”
