The students at Lakeside Union Middle School in the Lakeside Union School District are making their way through Covid-19 closures by social distanced dancing! Students in the Middle School’s visual and performing arts program came together to learn a dance via Zoom and then create a virtual end of the year showcase video. Although students cannot participate in many of their normal extra-curricular activities or events, LMS students are showing up and standing out in front of a virtual crowd!

With distance learning in place this year, students have not been able to participate in normal activities, but at Lakeside Middle School, students apart of the dance program were able to continue to develop their talents virtually, creating multiple virtual performances for both dance and show choir. Students have been able to master new techniques and choreography through utilizing Zoom! Recently, students used Zoom to learn a routine over the course of three, forty-five-minute classes. Students then submitted a video of themselves doing the routine to their teacher, Kimberly Messina, who edited them all together to create a memorable and unique end of year showcase!

The visual and performing arts program at Lakeside Middle School was initially formed in 2006 to help kids get connected and develop new skills. The initiative started with just one dance and one choir class but has gone on to encompass more than half the school as a fully functioning program. Participants in the program have great opportunities to showcase their skills at multiple venues in the Los Angeles and San Diego Counties.
