Hayward, Wis. – A typical summer is filled with entry-level jobs, friends, dating, days on the lake, or in most cases, summer vacations. However, for another group of youth, their summers include driving four (4) to five (5) hours to practices, twice a week, in major metropolitan areas to participate in what is called AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball. This is also true for other sports; hockey, softball, baseball, volleyball, track & field, and so on.
After a five year stint of driving nearly 1,000 miles per week to practices and tournaments all over Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Upper Michigan, AAU comes to Hayward. Founder, Curtis DeCora, created Rising Stars Basketball to tap into the talent northern Wisconsin basketball has to offer. Rising Stars Basketball is a Wisconsin AAU Basketball Club.
Every single tournament included players from southern Wisconsin, very few of the players getting these opportunities, exposure, and extra game time were from northern Wisconsin. Rising Stars Basketball provides an opportunity for northern Wisconsin athletes to play in their own backyards, without the 1,000 mile weeks, and late nights.
June 16, 2020, DeCora took to recruiting a team of players interested in participating in these highly competitive tournaments. Quickly, players from Hayward, Colfax, Chippewa Falls, and Lacrosse answered the call, and Rising Stars Basketball was born. Rising Stars Basketball is currently undergoing a 501(c)7 IRS designation to identify as a social and recreational club, allowing local businesses to invest in the futures of local athletes.
The Summer 2020 season included a 12U Girls team which participated in three (3) tournaments in Wisconsin Dells WI, and Waukesha WI. The newly formed club provided a great opportunity for eager athletes to take to the courts, compete, and develop as young athletes and ambassadors of their community.
Rising Stars Basketball strives to fill the void current AAU clubs fail to meet, with a three tiered approach; (1) competitive game play throughout the summer, (2) skills camps throughout northern Wisconsin, and (3) Online training programs. The Summer 2020 season included wins over some powerhouse clubs, and consolation championships against great talent.
