Rich White Americans by Virginia Dale is an unforgettable suspense thriller. Meet Inny, an optimistic, adventurous psychology major at Berkeley in 1963, who falls in love with the first black English professor at the college, is nearly raped then stalked by the stepson of a state senator, and this is just the beginning of her odyssey. Yes, Inny has the chance to mingle with some of the richest people in Montecito, but shocking and unexpected consequences follow. College in the Sixties was all about expressing yourself and standing for something, but Inny wasn’t prepared for the events that unfolded. Race is an important theme in this book, and so are loss and love. This unconventional story has originality, edginess, and heart, offering something different and new for the suspense thriller genre. The action and drama are often surprising, and the conflict is heart-pounding.
Dale’s easy, frank style draws you in on the first page, and she is gifted at character building, plot, and pacing. As you read, you whizz through the pages earnestly, trying to find out what happens next because you quickly fall for the character of Inny and her irrepressible personality. When things happen, they seem to be happening to real people, and believability is what this author does best. Inny’s occasional cynicism and dark humor are a welcome touch, as are her character traits and personal observations. This is a book that can be interpreted on different levels and isn’t just a surface story. Rich White Americans by Virginia Dale is a cannonball of a novel that should not be missed.
