Elizabeth and Sara had been active in anti-apartheid politics in the 1990s so when Mandela was elected, they took their kids out of school and moved to southern Africa for eight months. They traveled fifteen thousand miles through South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Swaziland. They weren’t consciously beginning a business… but they noticed they were buying more than we could keep, give away, or sell at garage sales. In the beginning, they did art shows and held open houses. Today, they sell art and beads on Africadirect.com, eBay, Etsy, and Amazon.
Occasionally, Sara and Elizabeth go on six-week buying trips to Africa and bring back containers full of masks, sculptures, textiles, and beads. Additionally, they are connected with hundreds of African traders, who come from both coasts and are invited to display their artwork for purchase at the Africa Direct offices. Elizabeth and Sara care immensely about supporting living artists and buy from co-ops in South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Swaziland, and other organizations.
In addition to running the business and being active grandparents, Sara and Elizabeth are politically active and support the causes they care about. One of the organizations Africa Direct supports through eBay for Charity is, SHOFCO (Shining Hope for Communities), whose grassroots movement transforms urban slums by providing critical services for community advocacy platforms, education, and leadership development for women and girls in Africa. Africa Direct is proud to have contributed more than $160,000 to African charities through eBay For Charity!
