Drive through any college town on a sunny Saturday afternoon and one will likely experience familiar sights and sounds; loud music, laughter and cheers, and maybe a few stumbles here and there from care-free students partying it up.
For Greenville, NC, home of the East Carolina Pirates, one might notice these gatherings looking more like a 1980s rock show than a run-of-the-mill tailgate party. Crop tops and cut off denim shorts, crazy patterns and ski goggles; anything goes. Retro fashion has without a doubt made a resurgence at East Carolina and is quickly spreading across other campuses thanks to a group of students with a passion for bringing clothing back to life that was once discarded.
Tailgate Classics specializes in providing “wild” vintage and retro clothing styles to the collegiate-aged demographic. Founder Cameron Higley began collecting vintage clothing upon arriving as a freshman in 2015. What started off as a side hustle has now ballooned into a household name among college students.
The company began by selling vintage hats from Higley’s collection and hand delivering them on campus to students at ECU. As the company began to gain popularity, they jumped into the eCommerce world and began shipping vintage gear to students across the country.
Tailgate Classics now sources hundreds of unique, 1/1 vintage items weekly from thrift stores and auctions to flea markets and beyond. The company has recently moved into a flagship store in Greenville where they operate their retail store and fulfillment center. Higley has since added 5 employees and the team is currently working on developing their own private label.
