The Jiger and the Tiraffe by Penny Higgins is a beautiful poem that sparks little peoples’ imaginations into life from the very first line. It’s a whimsical tale of how two animals might have come to be, all wrapped up in a message about the love and hope God offers everybody for a lifetime. The result; Hours of togetherness for the whole family that allows the little people to have fun and the adults to spread their love and God’s love. To learn more about this unique style of storytelling, an interviewer sat down with the author to hear more.
“It has always been my belief that the power of faith is something no one should have to miss out on, no matter how young or old they may be.
“I’ve long been a storyteller with a real passion for expressing myself on paper. However, I get tongue tied when talking with people. I have a very vivid imagination, and one day while reading about a tiger I started imagining him with a long neck. Thinking about a project that would allow me to combine the two of them, the answer was staring me in the face. From the moment I picked up my pen and started bringing this playful world to life, I never looked back.”
Interesting, so what’s the one key thing that she wants every little reader to take away from this unique poem?
“Deep down this book is all about having fun and spending time with the whole family, getting your imagination working in a variety of different ways, and falling in love with reading. I hope in some small way it helps make reading the habit of a lifetime which no little reader will be able to give up. More than that though, I want it to present the powerful message that comes to you when you start to see that despite all of our differences, we are all children of God. It’s a message that’s had a powerful impact on my life, and one I think promotes kindness, openness and understanding amongst all peoples. You’re basically never too young to start celebrating diversity, and recognize the one over reaching Force which draws us all together!”
We love this outlook on life, so what can we expect next from her pen?
“Writing has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I write when the spirit strikes, and sometimes purely for the sake of it. But I want everything I put my name on to be truly special for the people who take the time to read it. They’re investing their time and energy in me, and I feel compelled to do the same when it’s time for me to entertain them. Rest assured that when a new idea comes to me, I won’t hesitate to get it down on paper for you.”
