Sleep Dog Mattress has taken their advocacy for truck drivers’ safety and health and other road users a notch higher with their recent blog that carefully examines the new trucking laws and the effect on truckers. The new Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rule, as stipulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, has come with new requirements for truck drivers across the nation.
The trucking industry remains an important part of the transportation sector and the US economy as a whole. The different stakeholders in the industry come up with solutions to enhance operations and ensure the sector’s growth. In a similar vein, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) under the U.S. Department of Transportation rolled out a new set of laws guiding truck drivers’ operations, which has come under strong criticisms from the stakeholders in the industry. Consequently, Sleep Dog Mattress aims to shed more light on the laws to better understand individuals and businesses in a new blog post.
What is the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rule?
The ELD rule, which applies to most motor carriers and drivers, including commercial buses and trucks, and Canada- and Mexico-domiciled drivers, requires drivers to use an electronic logging device to record their hours of service. This ultimately makes it a bit more difficult to “fudge” total hours worked. However, the law’s rigidity has increased the service cost for truck drivers and logistic companies, leading to decreased productivity and an increase in team driving.
Since December 18, 2017, a driver using an ELD must have an ELD information ready with the commercial auto vehicle that contains:
• User manual to operate the ELD
• Instruction sheet describing the data transfer process and step-by-step instruction to transfer this data to an authority
• Instruction sheet describing ELD malfunction reporting procedure
• A supply of blank drivers’ records of duty status (RODS) graph-grids to record the driver’s working hours and related information for 8 days at a minimum.
While the law aims to reduce driver-related truck accidents and safer driving, it lowers the driver’s income and the company’s profit margin. The rise of team driving or tandem has been significant as drivers and companies look to keep the cost low while avoiding major penalties from authorities. Moreover, drivers need to take adequate rest to refresh the body for the next round of trips. Luckily, many tractor-trailer sleepers support top and bottom bunks, but not all offer comfortable mattresses.
