An alcohol rehab center in Toronto has issued a warning of the dangers of alcohol addiction in Canada – particularly among young people.
Inspire Change Wellness Addiction Treatment Center for Men has pulled together a full report detailing the ‘Facts about Alcohol Addiction’ and worries around young people becoming addicted.
“Statistics are showing that heavy drinking is more likely among young people aged from 15 to 24 years old. During this age range, youngsters are exposed to stresses of school, college, finding their sexuality, discovering their careers and peer pressure. And, they discover drink and drugs to make it all feel a bit better.
“Many people go through phases and come out the other end, but many don’t and 4% of Canadians are thought to be alcoholics right now. In the last decade, 600,000 Canadians are thought to have become dependent on alcohol and it all starts at that really vulnerable age when people discover alcohol and use it to get through tough times.
“We pulled together the ‘Facts About Alcohol Addiction’ report so people would start to worry and be concerned about some of the trends that are coming to the forefront about alcohol addiction.
“As a rehab center, we see first-hand the damage that alcohol can do to the lives and health of people of all ages, and their friends and families. Something needs to be done to help people in this vulnerable age group to get through the challenges they face without having to turn to drink and drugs to get them through,” he added.
Inspire Change Wellness Addiction Treatment Center for Men is a rehab center especially for men and helps people in their recovery from addiction to alcohol, narcotics and prescription drugs. The clinic offers inpatient programs to help wean people off their substance of choice and help them start living a life without drugs and alcohol.
“The stats around underage drinking are really worrying and teenagers who start drinking at an early age are much more likely to become alcoholics and they are much more likely to become addicted to other substances.
“If young people start drinking then it can have a huge impact on their lives – excessive alcohol consumption at an early age can impact on development, performance at school and future career prospects. It can also lead to teenage pregnancies, sexual assaults, and teenagers who drink are much more likely to give into the pressure of more addictive drugs like marijuana, cocaine and heroin. It is also thought that early exposure to alcohol has a strong link to teenage suicide,” he added.
