Residents of South Carolina can now take their required driver’s license renewal vision test online as Cleared to Drive expands its highly popular COVID-friendly virtual eye exam to the Palmetto State.
The requirement to pass a vision test when renewing your driver’s license is a relatively new one for South Carolina drivers. The additional screening, instituted by the SCDMV on Oct. 1, 2020, brings new challenges to those looking to minimize in-person contact during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cleared to Drive’s online vision test provides a far more convenient option. “We’ve helped thousands of people safely take their vision test online already,” said Dr. Kerinna McDonald, a South Carolina licensed optometrist and the founder of Cleared to Drive. “We couldn’t be more excited to bring the same invaluable option to South Carolina residents.”
Checking your vision virtually may seem novel, but online eye tests are no different from all the other ways our lives have increasingly moved online in the age of COVID-19. Building a new eye chart from scratch allowed Cleared to Drive to rethink the traditional eye chart for the modern age. All it takes is a cell phone, laptop, or tablet and just a few minutes to confirm that an individual’s visual acuity meets South Carolina’s driving standards.
“Vision tests are easy to complete online and a really valuable option for people who want to lower their risk of exposure to COVID-19,” said Dr. McDonald.
South Carolina is the first state expansion for Cleared to Drive after launching in New York last year. The startup’s online eye tests are currently available for South Carolina residents from Monday to Thursday.
