Binaural beats are a brainwave entrainment technology that helps the listener to achieve a meditative state more easily. This is why MEYA app, a new application that combines music with meditation and beyond, infuses binaural beats in most of its guided and unguided sessions.
Traditionally binaural beats sound more like a pulsing or a repetitive noise that can quickly become boring or annoying for many people. MEYA fuses binaural beats with different music genres to make them an experience as enjoyable as listening to a song – whilst still providing all of the benefits of the brainwave entrainment effect!
Binaural Beats were first discovered over 150 years ago by German Scientist H.W.Dove, but it’s only in the last few years that their use has become more common as their effectiveness became more proven.
In essence, the technology is based on two different fixed frequencies that are played in the left and right ear simultaneously. When this happens, a third frequency is created “by difference” in the brain. It’s this third frequency that entrains the brainwave and facilitates a meditative state: in less than ten minutes, binaural beats are able to modify the brainwave frequency.
Each frequency is associated to a different state of the mind:
Gamma (27Hz+) – Improves cognitive enhancement, memory recall and information processing.
Beta (13hz-27hx) – This is our “default” frequency, in which we are alert.
Alpha (8Hz-13Hz) – This is the brainwave frequency Ideal for improving positive thinking and meditation. It is the type of brainwave we have when we are about to fall asleep or wake up in the morning: full relaxation with self-awareness.
Theta (4Hz-8Hz) – Ideal for deep relaxation and meditation and can stimulate dreaming and creativity.
Delta (1Hz-4Hz) – This frequency helps deep sleep and relaxation. It’s associated with pain relief as well as cortisol reduction.
The use and the purpose of binaural beats technology may differ for each individual. For some it can help decrease anxiety, for others it might be useful to increase concentration or deepen the level of meditation.
Proponents of binaural beat and some studies suggest that the potential benefits include:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Increased focus, concentration, and motivation
- Improved confidence
- Better long term memory after exposure to beta pattern frequencies
- Deeper meditation
- Enhanced performance and mood
MEYA app offers a dedicated section for anyone who wants to start the practice. All that’s needed is a pair of headphones or earbuds. MEYA app recommends listening to them for at least 10-12 minutes every day for 21 days to feel any effect.
The user might feel a sort of light pulse in the head, which is normal and means they are working!
The pulsing also offers a very effective “anchor” for meditation.
