The COVID-19 pandemic is transforming employment in the first half of 2021 with a significant rise in hybrid roles in particular.
“Instead of hiring two experts for two different roles, they are trying to find one person to fit both opportunities,” says About Staffing CEO Sharlene Massie. “Temporary employees will continue to be in high demand with an increasing number of employers needing to fill vacant roles due to leaves from the workplace.”
Massie offered insights into Calgary’s job market during an interview on March 29, 2021, with CTV News. The About Staffing founder of the Calgary and Edmonton recruitment agency said that from the job seekers’ perspective, the ability to multi-task and a willingness to learn on the job are invaluable skills that will help people searching for work stand out in a very challenging market.
Massie said candidates are also becoming increasingly conscious about the reputation and branding of companies, as they are aware their own personal reputations can be impacted by their employers. Unsurprisingly, technology has played an important role not only in the recruitment process but also across industries. Opportunities to work from home and remotely have certainly increased.
Sick leaves and a higher birth rates during this period (COVID babies) have also been influencing the demand for temporary employees. Workers with hard skills that can be marketed online find it easier to find employment, even during this phase of higher-than-average unemployment rates. The hiring process has become slightly longer due to a drop in face-to-face interactions and increased virtual interviews. Employers and employees cannot get a feel for each other, and it is more challenging to determine if a professional relationship has the potential for a long and lasting fit.
“Reputation management for both employers and employees attempting to land the best of the best is another increasingly critical priority,” says Massie. “Both hiring managers and candidates are spending more time researching one another, examining reviews and scrutinizing one another’s online presence. A higher-than-normal unemployment rate does not necessarily mean it is a ‘buyer’s market’ for employers as high-quality, versatile candidates will always be in demand.
“We are a full-service staffing agency that can fulfill your local and national employment needs,” says Massie. This explains why About Staffing adds value for its clients seeking to hire both direct and temporary employees. “Clients gain access to thousands of Grade A Humans that have been screened, interviewed and tested. Leave the recruiting to us. Our value is in our process, geographic and digital reach and database.
“The About Staffing success story stems from working with great people and businesses that apply these core values in their workplaces. As Masters at Matching Culture, we get to know our clients and candidates. We not only ask the right questions, but we ask the questions no one else is asking.”
