The New Sensor-Infused Insert and First IoT Wheelchair Cushion, Sensoria® Mat Launches Today on Kickstarter

Sensoria® Mat aims to help wheelchair users reduce the risk of ulceration and improve their overall health and quality of life.  The best way to prevent ulcers is to regularly change positions and perform pressure relief activities multiple times throughout the day.  Sensoria® Mat combines textile pressure sensors, artificial intelligence algorithms and its mobile app to alert the user when it is time to change positions and guides them on executing effective pressure relief activities.

A pressure injury or sore is unfortunately a very common complication after a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and can have devastating effects.  These injuries can develop when pressure is applied to the skin for extended periods of time.  This continuous pressure reduces blood flow to the skin and underlying tissues, resulting in cell injury and in some cases the related complications can lead to death. Nearly 80% of people with SCI will experience at least one pressure injury in their lifetime.  The great news, however, is that most of them are preventable.

Being proactive in the prevention of pressure injuries is essential to saying healthy.  The best way to prevent ulcers is to change position and perform pressure relief exercises.

Each Sensoria® Mat is hand-made, and is composed of two parts. First, a cushion is carefully crafted with skin refreshing gel and comfortable memory foam paired with a proprietary mat insert that is infused with soft textile pressure sensors. The second component, Sensoria® Core, is a Bluetooth Smart rechargeable, miniaturized IoT hub device that snaps into the insert to collect pressure relief monitoring data and helps wheelchair users maintain their daily rehab routine, stay healthy and reduce risk of ulceration.

For those interested in continuing to use their own cushion, the textile pressure sensor infused insert may be used and positioned directly under their own existing cushion to provide similar functionality. The new Sensoria® Mat leverages software, electronics and pressure sensors to coach individuals on a set of activities and reminds users to perform them multiple times a day.

The fully functional, patent pending smart cushion and mobile app are currently being tested at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Los Angeles as part of a US federal government funded clinical trial.  Their hospital and research center have earned the highest status as a spinal cored injury care facility and is the only nationally designated spinal cord injury model system located on the west coast.

Philip S. Requejo, Chief Executive Officer at Rancho Research Institute was quoted as saying, “It is from the spirit of clinically driven innovations that the collaboration between Sensoria Health and Rancho Research Institute was established. We enable patients, researchers and clinicians to collect and monitor the key metrics that help to improve the health of wheelchair users and reduce the risk of pressure injury development.  We believe that IoT connected assistive technologies such as the Sensoria® Mat will help achieve our vision of sustained health and well-being within our community of wheelchair users.”

The earliest adopters of the campaign will receive the product at 50% off MSRP and will be delivered within 30 days of the conclusion of the campaign.  You can reserve yours today.
