With the celebrated reopening of theaters and businesses across the nation, Robert Greene aka ‘RG, the Protagonist’ has returned to the stage in preparation for his starring role as Nelson Mandela. Previews of the play will take place on July 10th and 11th, while the official opening happens on July 17th — just one day before Nelson Mandela’s birthday. The Actor’s Temple Theatre at 339 West 47th Street (btw. 8th & 9th ave) will serve as home for this highly anticipated production.
The many years of research that went into preparing for the role of Mandela has inspired Robert to record a song called “Free Lion — Madiba’s Theme”. The song tells Mandela’s story from a first person character perspective. Robert’s poignant lyrics paired with dynamic musical production from DJ and tech enthusiast Jon Blok, creates a blended sound which utilizes African drums, hip hop swagger, and touches of electronic synths to give the song a theatrical shimmer. The music video for the song features a solo performance from acclaimed dancer and choreographer Lamin Thiam. In addition, a unique NFT, or digital collectible has also been created which offers the owner a one-on-one video call with RG, along with a special gift.
The multi-talented Robert Greene, aka ‘RG The Protagonist’, fully immerses himself into both theatre and the musical arts. His debut album, “The Greene Crate” was partially inspired by the 90’s golden age sound of hip hop. A blended mix of crate-digging soul samples accompany boosted synths and rhythmic hooks throughout the project.
A total of 6 interviews were conducted with RG that share his emotional and creative thoughts behind his music and challenges during the pandemic. The Greene Crate is available on all major music platforms.
