Egyptian-born American singer, artist and producer, Sherif Lederrick, also known by his stage name, Paintingwithpoison, has taken the music production world by storm with his knack for churning out hits upon hits.
Born in Cairo but raised in Pittsburgh, the 26-year-old gifted producer has worked with rising artists such as GothBoiClique, Lil Peep (whom he holds in high esteem and considers him a role model), HorseHead, and Coldhart.
Lederrick first ventured into music production as a teenager but had always had a flourishing connection with music all his life. “I grew up listening to whatever my mom would play. She played a lot of Bob Marley; then, as I grew older, I listened to a lot of indie rock and experimental genres of music. Anything from Phish to Spacemen 3 to Nine Inch Nails. I got into rap in high school. I started producing for the first time when I was 19, but I’ve been playing around with music and instruments my whole life basically.”
Before finding his feet in music production, Lederrick had to contend with balancing school and work with his music life. “The challenges I faced were mostly trying to balance school and working long hours with also being obsessed with making music and wanting to spend all my time doing it”, he recalled.
Lederrick eventually overcame those challenges and has since grown into a music producer of great repute. Today he’s adept at making rap beats, techno, and rock. He’s had to experiment with a lot of different types of music to stay interested in making it year after year. In fact, it is noteworthy to mention that Lederrick was one of the originators of the emo rock beat wave before he transitioned into making melodic spiritual techno.
When he’s not in the studio making hit songs, Lederrick gets busy with other ventures to bring home the bacon, among which are trading stocks and crypto, and more recently real estate. And, when he desires to unwind after weeks of working on projects, Lederrick spends his pastime painting, street art, throwing shows, designing clothes, admiring architecture, travelling, experiencing new cultures.
Lederrick is a man with plans and visions. He’s set plans in motion to release future music projects and artworks. “My plan for my next project is to release a vinyl along with a zine. I like releasing music projects as a whole experience and making rare and interesting kinds of merch”, he revealed.
Lederrick has been in music for the better of 8 years and has seen the good and bad side of the music industry. “The most valuable lesson I learned was to stay independent at all costs. Never sign anything unless you have a massive amount of leverage because the industry makes its living scamming people out of their music rights basically” he said.
To his fans and younger ones, Lederrick has a simple message of advice: “Be yourself and ignore what anyone thinks about you, never give up, it takes at least five years to get anywhere, perfect your craft first then everything else will fall into place”. Lederrick is an embodiment of this message. With purpose and persistence, he stuck to his craft and today; he’s well on his way to greatness.
