Sanjiv Patel Shares His 6 Life Lessons toward Mindful Leadership

These steps are surprisingly simple and revolve around one core concept: that an individual can serve as an effective leader only after they have mastered the self.

1. It Starts With Self-Awareness 

The first stepping stone for effective leadership, according to Sanjiv, is a high level of self-awareness. Several strategies exist for developing self-awareness, such as keeping a daily journal. This journal should note small and large goals, identify priorities, and outline plans.

Aside from keeping a journal, anyone on the path to self-awareness should use a combination of tools that enhance self-awareness, the motivational speaker and life coach says. This includes making time for daily self-reflection and other mindfulness habits such as meditation. 

‌2. Understand There’s Always a Choice

Even though it often doesn’t feel like it, there are always choices involved when things don’t go as planned. Although no one can control every single situation, you always have control over how you’ll react in the face of adverse events. How you react will have a significant impact on your long game.

‌3. Learn to Let Go of the Negative

To make room for positive situations and circumstances, you need to release the negative tendencies holding you back, Sanjiv says. This involves letting go of toxic relationships, unhealthy behavior patterns, and negative life philosophies. Doing so will clear the way for more positive, productive people and circumstances to enter your life.

Personal reflection and contemplation play a large role in this, the life coach and motivational speaker explains. Identify components in your life that drain positive energy and release them.

‌4. Cultivate Humility 

At its core, humility is the realization that we’re all part of a greater whole. Those with humility treat everyone the same, from the janitorial staff at their building to the CEOs of their company. Humility is one of the hardest character strengths to achieve, according to Sanjiv, who says it begins by resisting the urge to be the one who knows everything and always has an answer.

Humility is developed as one learns to be more mindful. In addition to practicing mindfulness daily, cultivating humility involves listening to others and embracing the spirit of service.

Effective, mindful leaders know that the expertise and knowledge of those around them are invaluable. As a motivational speaker who advocates for mental health, mindfulness, and resilience, Sanjiv says a mindful leader puts the words of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj into practice daily by acknowledging the joy, accomplishments, and progress of others as one’s own.

‌5. Cultivate Gratitude 

Like humility, gratitude often takes time, patience, and practice to achieve. Expressing gratitude for the good things in life is easy. Authentic gratitude, though, also encompasses the challenges and obstacles one must face in life, viewing these as opportunities for personal growth.  

6. Embrace Life Lessons 

No one is immune to hardships and obstacles. But everyone has the chance to embrace life’s lessons and to learn from them. Accepting this takes a significant amount of objectivity and self-awareness, so be sure to pay extra attention to journaling when you’re going through trying times, Sanjiv says. 

Learning from mistakes involves acknowledging and accepting them first. Once you do this, you’ll be able to truly see the life lessons behind these mistakes.

When you’re facing a challenging time brought on by mistakes, Sanjiv recommends taking a step back and asking yourself what you would have done differently. This, he says, will help you be better prepared the next time you’re faced with a similar situation. ‌

Remember, Life is a Work in Progress

Sanjiv’s life lessons may seem a bit overwhelming, but remember, life is a work in progress. The motivational speaker and life coach reminds us that we were designed by nature to be adaptive throughout our lives, changing along with the circumstances we face.
