OTT Platforms have been growing by leaps and bounds. Even though they look simple to users, there is a lot of technical wizardry that goes under the hood. Catering to the audience needs like Live streaming, video on demand, and catch-up content needs a rock solid architecture. On top of that, the exponential growth of audience coming to these platforms as well as increase in average time spent on these platforms means the platform has to be infinitely scalable at a short notice.
One such OTT company approached Genesis NGN in 2017. The company had already entered the OTT space. However, there were challenges including frequent outages, a slow backend, and a not so intuitive frontend. Also, the company needed to address its younger customer base that was moving towards on-the-go consumption of the content.
The company wanted a product which provides access to both Live TV and on Demand content via mobile app and website, while ensuring the security of the content. In addition to that, the platform had to be supported by a quickly scalable infrastructure to support sudden traffic peaks while streaming live events
Genesis created a completely revamped OTT platform, including iOS and Android Apps as well as Web. The platform offered access to 400+ live channels, 5,000+ VoD titles, and 80,000 catch-up assets for its 15 Mn registered users. Solution highlights included:
- A microservice architecture based scalable system design for handling peak traffic
- The search engine was enabled with context identification and personalization
The revamped OTT platform was launched by the mid of 2017. Key advantages include:
- Access to Live content, VOD and Catch-up content was an added value to existing DTH users and hence enhanced the client’s customer acquisition & retention.
- Rented Premium Movies were synced as showcase content on DTH and emerged as a new revenue stream Traffic through mobile devices was better engaged that enabled increase in recharges and upsell.
Speaking about this achievement, Jan Friberg, COO of Genesis NGN, said, “When the company came to us, they were on the verge of a massive growth, but their existing platform was holding that growth back. Challenge for my team was not just to create a completely revamped platform, but also do it fast, so that the subscribers do not move over to another OTT player. I am glad that not only we fulfilled that challenge, but we delivered a platform that has become the centerpiece to the growth of our client”.
OTT platforms have really taken the world by storm and even the traditional DTH providers have launched their OTT platforms. But getting it right is a big battle, not only the platforms need to have solid content, but also a technically advanced platform. Companies like Genesis are helping the clients get at least one of those aspects right.
