In 2015 former professional baseball player and NCAA Division I coach, Xan Barksdale had an idea for a conference for baseball coaches that was unlike any other conference that the baseball world had ever seen.
It was called CatcherCON and it only focused on sharing thoughts and ideas about how to improve baseball catchers’ defensive performance.
Fast forward to 2021 and CatcherCON has grown into one of the most respected coaching clinics in the country with attendees coming from almost every state.
The most impressive part of the story is that this clinic isn’t only for youth and college coaches, but almost half of all Major League Baseball organizations sent representatives to listen and learn from the panel of guest speakers that Barksdale has assembled this year.
When asked about CatcherCON’s reach into professional baseball Barksdale said “It’s been amazing to watch how the MLB presence has grown over the past few years. The two main reasons that professional organizations send their coaches is 1) to learn more about the latest trends in catching and, 2) to grow their coaching network.”
Barksdale added, “Almost everyone who speaks at CatcherCON is offered a job by an MLB team shortly after they finish presenting. That speaks volumes about their knowledge and their willingness to openly share ideas.” sounding like a proud father.
CatcherCON has found it’s home in Nashville, TN and, according to Barksdale, “it’s not going anywhere.”
