Not Addressing Addiction Will Continue to Have an Impact on Canadian Society, Warns Addiction Centre

Inspire Change Wellness, Vancouver addiction treatment centre for men, is working to raise awareness of the potential financial implications on Canadian economy of not addressing addiction in time and in an effective manner.

Based on recent, extensive data, substance use and abuse costs Canadian society almost $46 billion every year. The research was published by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction and the University of Victoria’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

Commenting on the data, a key Inspire Change Wellness spokesperson said ‘We have a responsibility towards our communities and the wider society to ensure that anyone who is struggling with substance abuse has access to safe and affordable options for rehabilitation. The data continues to show us that the cost of not addressing substance use and abuse effectively is much higher than the cost of doing it. We also know that the numbers of people living with an addiction has increased during the pandemic due to a number of factors.’

The study evaluated costs associated with the use of a wide range of substances, including alcohol, cannabis, opioids, cocaine and party drugs. The analysis evaluated impact on the costs associated with addiction into four categories: lost productivity which accounted for $20 billion, healthcare related costs were estimated at $13.1 billion, the criminal justice spend was $9.2 while other direct costs added up to $3.6 billion.

‘Canada is still dealing with a raging opioid crisis, many cities, like Edmonton or Calgary are experiencing increases in party drugs related harms, and we are also going through a pandemic that has forever changed our social landscape. It is essential that we not only continue to monitor these numbers but begin taking action. We are committed to playing a role in shifting this through awareness and our continued dedication to providing compassionate and expert addiction treatment services. We also recognize the importance of raising awareness of the different aspects of accessing them. Addressing the misinformation around it will hopefully encourage more people to seek help’, concluded the spokesperson.

The centre points out to the region of Alberta as a prime example of spikes in substance abuse that have been appropriately addressed. Inspire Change Wellness continues to be committed to join forces in the fight against addiction.
