Someone Somewhere scales up initiatives in a bid to empower women marginalized or living in poverty

Someone Somewhere is setting the bar high for entrepreneurs and businesses, showcasing how social impact and profitability go hand-in-hand and how women empowerment is key to accomplishing this mission.

Someone Somewhere, a B-corp certified social startup that collaborates with hundreds of rural artisans, is leading the charge in becoming a critical social catalyst through women empowerment in vulnerable areas.

Fatima Alvarez, Someone Somewhere co-founder and self-made social entrepreneur, said from the start, the team’s mission has been crystal clear: the team should have a purpose beyond selling and growing. It should, in the process, contribute to the well-being and development of all the artisans involved.

Anchored on its mission to lift millions of people out of poverty, it is committed to providing women who have been marginalized or living in poverty a chance to earn a fair wage.

The startup works with 270 artisans in seven of Mexico’s poorest states to apply traditional handcrafts on clothing and accessories to create quality, on-trend products. Some 12 million people in Mexico make up the artisan sector. About 70% of this number are women, mostly indigenous. Someone Somewhere seeks that artisans with whom the team can collaborate can make their own decisions, especially the leading women at the head of their work teams.

After the team’s visit to Napuan in Mexico, Fatima said its members discovered that most of the people living there were women living in poverty conditions. This is due to several factors, such as pervasive gender roles and expectations that women’s work is low-skilled. People also tend to undervalue their artisanal abilities, making it hard for them to find job opportunities.

Apart from promoting women empowerment outside, it fosters inclusivity within its organization. Someone Somewhere takes pride in its women members who play a vital role in its operations. In fact, fifty-four percent of the Someone Somewhere team is made up of women, and fifty-seven percent of its leadership positions are held by women. Meanwhile, 75% of the artisans whom the team collaborates with are women.

“Nowadays, society is changing its male gaze and has started to include women in multiple aspects of everyday life. When someone hears your voice becomes interested in what you are saying, that empowers you,” says Dani, a member of Someone Somewhere.
