International Medical Aid (IMA) named as GoAbroad’s Top Adventure Travel Organization of 2021

Apart from receiving the global honor of becoming a leading adventure travel organization of 2021, IMA continues its legacy of pushing for global health initiatives as it opens its Summer Healthcare Internships application.

International Medical Aid (IMA), an industry leader in providing a once-in-a-lifetime medical internship abroad for doctors, medical residents, medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pre-med undergraduates, has been named as GoAbroad’s Top Adventure Travel Organization of 2021.

“This honor serves as a testament of IMA’s dedication to providing every overseas hospital volunteer a safe and incredible opportunity to obtain pre-health experience in a public health setting while at the same time experiencing the culture and beauty of these places,” a representative said.

In line with its goal to provide global health initiatives and healthcare study abroad programs, IMA has opened applications for its Summer 2022 Health Internship program. Medical students and pre-med undergraduates are mentored by its outstanding personnel of devoted physicians and other healthcare professionals. The organization works with an extensive network of public and private hospitals to deliver rewarding, hands-on lessons tailored to each volunteer’s specific skill sets and educational backgrounds.

Erica Collins, a Summer 2021 alumna, described the experiences she countered during her six-week internship in Mombasa, Kenya, as “transformative.”

“It not only built on my foundation of medicine, but also increased my awareness of disease burden, cultural competency, politics, quality of healthcare, and so much more. The staff at CGTRH, including the consultants, medical officers, clinical officers, nurses, etc., were so open and willing to teach you. They were enthusiastic to answer all of my questions. I learned so much that it is already overlapping into my life back in the States,” wrote Erica in a review.

Earlier this March, the IMA team visited Mji wa Salama, Children’s Home in Kenya, and successfully conducted a Hygiene Education Session.

Before February closed, the IMA team also conducted a Community Medical Clinic at the Mdengerekeni Primary School in Mombasa, providing free consultation and medication to over two hundred and fifty residents in the Bamburi neighborhood. Its dedicated interns and local medical practitioners led the way and heavily contributed to the organization’s mission to improve access to quality healthcare globally.⁣

The organization ensures that all interns are acclimated to the clinical environment before the start of their rotations. Its Comprehensive Hospital Orientations provides interns with an in-depth overview of all clinical departments within the placement area, how the departments operate and offer an introduction to the attending staff. ⁣

Founded by Johns Hopkins alumni, IMA works with pre-health students across multiple disciplines, including medicine, nursing, dentistry, mental health, and physical therapy, to offer experiences that will elevate their preparation for medical school and graduate healthcare programs.

IMA works with underserved communities in East Africa, the Caribbean, and South America. It brings healthcare where it otherwise might not go, enhancing lives and providing valuable shadowing experiences to pre-health learners.
