Participate Learning and Nine Spanish Middle School Partners In NC To Conduct Virtual Model UN Debate With Students To Discuss Impact of Fast Fashion
As fast fashion and fads continue to sweep the globe, many agree that it is causing negative impacts on the environment and perpetuates poor working conditions for textile workers. Participate Learning will bring students together to discuss solutions to this growing problem and will culminate with a $5,000 donation from Participate Learning to charities researched and chosen by the student participants.

Chapel Hill, NC – April 25th, 2022 – Participate Learning has officially announced this week that they will be hosting a virtual Model UN debate in Spanish on May 10th 2022 regarding the problems of fast fashion and its impact on equitable labor and the environment. The Model UN is a simulated debate where student participants assume the role of representatives from different countries (delegations) and discuss issues related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a United Nations assembly.

Student participants are part of the Conexiones program, a middle school course for heritage speakers and students coming from elementary immersion programs. Conexiones is a secondary dual language immersion program that ensures continued growth in Spanish language proficiency while cultivating global competencies in post-immersion and heritage language learners.

The debate which will last for one and a half hours is not a competition, but instead an opportunity for Conexiones students to collaborate and share their learning with other students across North Carolina. Nine schools have been chosen to participate across North Carolina. Students will focus on possible policy solutions around the production and disposal of clothes as they represent countries around the world that are directly involved with this issue.

In addition to preparing for the debate, students will also research organizations having an impact on this issue and will guide Participate Learning to where they will donate $5,000 dollars.

The Participate Learning Model UN Debate will be held virtually on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 from 12:00pm-1:30pm. Register to watch the debate online here: https://www.participatelearning.com/conexiones-model-un/.
