The Inclusive Children’s Book Company Catering to the Low Vision Community

Inside Ability Books is helping both children and adults with vision loss indulge in their love for story time with its high contrast and large print books.

Not many people know that vision loss is a spectrum. One end of the spectrum can be accommodated simply with glasses or contacts. The other requires accommodations for independent mobility and additional assistive technologies for other daily tasks. However, in between lies a little-known community of legally-blind or low vision adults and children living with varying degrees of central and/or peripheral vision loss due to conditions such as cataracts, eye inflammation, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and Stargardt disease to name a few.  Currently, there are many high-tech and low-tech accommodations that grant people with low vision access to printed material such as e-books, audio books and costly electronic magnifiers. But like any avid story time book lover knows, it is a treasured experience to hold a book, inhale its scents, and flip its pages while snuggled up with the beloved child in their lives. An experience, unfortunately not often made accessible to all. This is a need that Inside Ability Books wants to fill for many in the low vision community with one fundamental design adjustment.

Founder, low vision Mom of two, Krystle Boateng understands these challenges intimately, having struggled to find large print options to read to her children.  She wants to, in her words, “create books where large print and high contrast are prioritized equally as much as the illustrations and literary artistry”. This desire led to the birth of Inside Ability Books, a company which aims to offer an accessibility solution for both adults and children who might be feeling unseen and alone. This accessibility solution will allow many low vision caretakers of small children to participate more comfortably in story time bonding, improve reading posture and reduce eye strain and fatigue.  In addition, children with print size and color contrast barriers may also follow along more easily to learn the words on the page.

Although, Inside Ability Books is chiefly concerned with printing literature for those who benefit from large print, high contrast or reverse contrast (White on Black letters), these books can be enjoyed by all with vivid illustrations and relatable concepts.
