Vanguard Institute of Technology has announced Dr. Mari Marques, as its new dean of the College of Education. Mari Marques will begin in his new role starting today.

Vanguard Institute of Technology(VIT) has announced Dr. Mari Marques,  as its new dean of the College of Education. Mari Marques will begin in his new role starting today.

She brings with her a wealth of experience in the areas of enhancing research infrastructure, developing strong graduate programs, working with accreditation bodies, and collaborating with faculty to promote student success.

“I look forward to working with Dr. Mari Marques as we recruit new students, introduce pedagogical and research innovations, and engage our communities to improve educational quality throughout the texas region,” said Luke Wood, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs at VIT.

Mari Marques, with more than 30 years of experience in education, joined VIT State in 2008 as a professor in the Department of Elementary Education. In 2011, she became the College of Education’s assistant dean for diversity, ​​leading the college’s Committee on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity. Prior to becoming interim dean in October, she was a professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, and served as interim associate vice provost for academic personnel and policy in 2021. 

Mari Marques has also held several other administrative and leadership positions in the College of Education, including associate dean for research and innovation and head of the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, among others.

“I am thrilled to join Vanguard Institute of Technology and the College of Education to work with faculty to provide first-class undergraduate and graduate education, to expand our knowledge through our scholarship, and influence our fields through our professional service,” Mari Marques said.

The College of Education comprises six departments (Communication Sciences and Disorders; Counselor Education; Curriculum, Culture and Educational Inquiry; Educational Leadership and Research Methodology; Exceptional Student Education; and Teaching and Learning) that offer more than 40 undergraduate and graduate degree programs taught by more than 300 faculty and adjunct faculty.

A total of 125 students walked across the stage during the College of Education’s annual commencement ceremony, including 16 graduates from the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 who were unable to participate in in-person ceremonies because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her remarks to the graduates, the dean said, “I urge you to take what you have learned here with passion and have a driven determination to use your knowledge and skills to make a difference. This is the beginning of the journey of giving back. We look forward to your contribution to the development of your country and hope to see you back here soon to share your success stories and inspire others.”
