Detour In Oregon By Award-Winning Author Donald F. Averill Explores The Life Of An Afghanistan War Veteran

The new page-turning fiction novel by Donald F. Averill follows the story of an Afghanistan War Veteran as he hitchhikes across the United States to find a job away from trouble, however, trouble finds him.

Donald F. Averill, a retired chemistry professor, has been putting out fiction stories one after another for the last decade. He has had many incredible books such as The Lighthouse Fire, The Kuiper Belt Deception, The Bitterroot Diamonds and the award winning An Iceberg’s Gift. After teaching chemistry at Eastern New Mexico University for twenty-four years, Averill took a detour from science and began writing fiction as a hobby.

What lies ahead for a war-veteran? After serving for several years in the army, one starts to forget even the most intimate of past connections. Averill’s story grapples with the dilemma of how a war veteran rediscovers himself after being far away from home for half a dozen years. It follows Daniel Newcomb, one of the recent Afghanistan War veterans, as he struggles to find a job after serving in the army. As he hitchhikes his way to his home in Alaska, he takes a small detour in the mountainous area of Multnomah Falls, Oregon, for an ordinary house-sitting job. Unbeknownst to him the mundane job would turn out to teach him some very valuable lessons.

After he agrees to housesit at a remote cabin for the winter, an unforeseen chain of events is set into motion that completely transform the nature of his job from mundane to exciting. He has to battle the foul weather conditions while keeping an eye on dogs that are with him at the cabin, has to battle intruders and finds time to learn how to fly a Cessna airplane. When he returns home months later from his job near Multnomah Falls, Dan finds out that his experiences over the past couple of months have taught him some very valuable lessons through powerful emotions which will surely play a large part in the new chapter of his life that he will now begin with long awaited re-unions, love and fulfilling his dreams of becoming a bush pilot.

Detour in Oregon by Donald F. Averill is a genuine reflection of the emotions and thought processes of a war veteran. Daniel is the complete embodiment of all the anxieties and all the joyous moments that one might have if they had just returned home from war. The character progression of Daniel as he learns timeless lessons from seemingly simple moments is very beautifully expressed in a story that will be read for some time to come.
