Darrell Kelley, Renowned Music Activist and Filmmaker Spike Lee to Participate in Memorial Service, Unity Gathering for Jayland Walker, Latest Victim of Police Violence Against People of Color

Akron, OH – July 13, 2022 – Acclaimed singer and songwriter, Darrell Kelley will join the family of Jayland Walker at a memorial service for Walker, who is the latest unarmed African-American victim of extreme police violence.

An independent recording artist and founder of Atlanta, GA-based Viral Records, Kelley is committed to being a loud and resounding voice against the injustice of police brutality and systemic racial inequality and has become internationally renowned for ushering in a new era of protest music.  As a result, Kelley has been lending his support through his music and activism, to families of victims of police brutality and racial injustice for the past few years.

“We continue to see situations like this all across the country, where police arrest white perpetrators of violent mass killings without incident, but when it comes to people of color, they get killed for the smallest of infractions and people are beyond tired of it,” says Kelley, who also created a song about this incident. “My mission is to continue to bring awareness to victims of hate crimes and questionable killings by police and white supremacists in the African American community, through my music and activism, because this has got to stop,” shared Kelley. ‘We don’t condone violence by anyone, but people are protesting because they are angry and will not go quietly into the night,” he said.

According to reports, following a four-minute police chase, Walker was shot more than 60 times by eight police officers in Columbus, Ohio, after getting out of his car unarmed. The incident is being investigated by city and state officials and a Go-Fund Me site has been set up on behalf of the family.

The Jayland Walker Memorial is to take place on Wednesday, July 13 from 1:00 to 2:30p.m., at the Akron Civic Theatre, located at 192 S. Main St., Akron, OH 44308.
