Recently, all of the 49 venues of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games have been opened to facilitate the sporting life of residents in Chengdu based on certain conditions, although the Games have been rescheduled to take place from 28 July to 8 August 2023.
At Dong’an Lake Sports Park which will stage the opening ceremony, visitors can play such sports as badminton, table tennis, and basketball, which are included at the international multi-sports event next year; Sichuan International Tennis Centre provides the public with outdoor space and public fitness facilities like tennis courts. Dwellers in the host city have benefited from the Games to a large extent.
With the venues mentioned above and a 100-kilometre first-class greenway that connects 121 ecological parks, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in Southwest China, is a paradise for sports fans in many ways.
Cycling, a sport that can be done all year round, is part of everyday life in this park city. In the past six months, cycling trips there cover a total of 178.44 million kilometers, which is equivalent to about 4,461 laps around the earth, according to statistics released by the Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Sport in early July. Dong’an Lake Sports Park is among the most popular sites where cyclists start their trips on the Tianfu Greenway.
Thanks to accessible facilities and advanced technology in Chengdu, residents can play a wide variety of sports including winter sports despite the change of seasons. Xindu JF Dry Ski Four Season Resort, a 43-meter-high and 112-meter-long snowless big air venue, for example, has drawn many sports fans like Olympians Gu Ailing and Su Yiming.
“Chengdu is a great city for sports lovers. Especially in recent years, with all of the greenways and the sports courts, they’ve been built here. It’s a great place to work out and have fun.” said Damon, an American basketball coach who lives in Chengdu.
