Paia, HI – July 25, 2022 – Michael Baskin is an industry-leading architect and designer operating out of Paia, Hawaii. Having grown up near the ocean, Baskin gained an appreciation for coastal towns. After completing his post-secondary education at the University of California and Pepperdine University, he established Baskin Design LLC, a design firm focused on the restoration and preservation of historic properties. He gained valuable experience renovating old homes in California before eventually relocating to Maui.
Baskin currently operates a 16-room boutique hotel known as The Paia Inn. As a popular tourist destination, it is perfect for individuals and families wanting to experience island life. In a recent online interview, Baskin takes the time to discuss some of the challenges he has faced as a builder, but also explains how every experience has been a learning opportunity. When asked how he has achieved success, he claims that a “lack of fear” and self-confidence have helped him tremendously.
“When I first purchased a 35,000 sq ft commercial building built in 1910 I knew I would have a lot to learn but I believed I could overcome any obstacle that came my way. On that project I took on a partner who had experience with commercial tenant leasing so I could focus on the design work that was my forte and learn from him the legal and leasing side of the commercial business. It is important to learn as much from business associates as possible. I also hire experienced professionals such as architects, engineers, permit expediters, and accountants.”
Baskin attributes much of his success to his ability to select qualified individuals and delegate responsibilities accordingly. Alongside his professional achievements, he is also an active member of his community. He recently designed a beachfront wedding and cultural arts venue, Temple Makai and Surfclub and sits as the Director of the Paia Community Association.
