Mongulai Brings an Assortment of Mongolian Items Right to One’s Doorstep

Mongulai is a Mongolian online platform that markets domestically produced, handcrafted items that reflect the nomadic Mongolian culture. Since 2016, founder Telmen Luvsandorj has been focusing on positively impacting his country.

On August 1, Mongulai Marketplace started a new food subscription service. The business is a Mongolian-owned and operated online platform that sells handcrafted, domestically created goods that reflect the nomadic culture. The founder is a man who is always looking for a way to make a positive impact on his country. Over time, he went to the local artisan and SME exhibitions and found top quality, creative apparel, and food products from natural eco materials.

Many of the products were local specialties produced in a family business that did not sell out of the country. The founder decided to change that. He launched an online marketplace featuring food and dairy products (from grass-fed livestock), and all kinds of wool products that use sustainable wool from yak, sheep, camel, and goat (cashmere).

The Marketplace supports many small businesses, craftsmen, and artisans in Mongolia. Purchase from the Mongulai supports Mongolian herders, craftsmen, and artisans and creates a real change in sustainable income for hundreds of small business people in Mongolia. Although some companies proliferated in recent years. Mongulai stands from the rest: with more than 7000 orders fulfilled to 30 different countries, their revenue doubled every year since 2016.

In 2014, Telmen Luvsandorj founder of this fast-growing marketplace, became obsessed with Mongolian history and ancient culture in way of doing things. By studying that, he observed that Mongolians have been living very healthy life since the early centuries. Grassfed livestock meat and dairy products are a better choice when compared with livestock farming.

This creates stress on an animal that can heavily impact the final by-product. In 2012, After studying aircraft engineering in Canada, he moved back to his country and get a job at an Airline company. In his mind, he always looking for a way to make a positive impact on his country.

Because even though Mongolia has a great history, culture, and vast kind of natural resources, lots of talented craftsman and artisan have a hard time living in the country and working hard labor at other developed countries. Mongolia still exports most of its agricultural and mining resources without adding value. The country’s natural resources are exported to China, which makes products with them and exports to the United States and other developed nations at a higher price.

Over time, he went to the local artisan and SME exhibitions and found top quality, creative apparel and food products from natural eco materials that promising but many of the products were local specialties produced in a family business that did not sell out of the country. So he decided to change that, by creating an online marketplace that allows purchases from many small and mid-sized Mongolian enterprises that makes beautiful handmade and manufactured items, but are unable to export goods.

Due to the reason of lack of business and marketing knowledge, limited payment options to sell their goods to overseas. Paypal, Stripe and many other popular payment gateways don’t work with Mongolian banks.

Over the past few years, Telmen has been expanding. In 2022, he launched a food subscription service. Under the black square lid is a hand-picked assortment of edible goods made by small businesses. Everyday items such as Yak Ghee, a healthy alternative for making food, Yak Milk Soap that nourishes your skin, Seabuckthorn hand butter, etc…

They also planned to launch a new canvas print-on-demand store for artists in Mongolia.

Thanks to the authentic, unique products they have, people love the products from all over the world. With no additional funding, he bootstrapped the company to over $2 million a year in revenue and is set to make $6 million next year.
