“Reviewed By K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite

The Looking-Glass Voyage: Memoirs of a Pakistani Surgeon is a work of non-fiction in the autobiographical and cultural writing subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Tariq Khan. As the title suggests, the work focuses on the life of a surgeon who originated from northwest Pakistan, at which point he witnessed deep unrest in his country but kept his head down to succeed and qualify in the medical profession. In a life that spans many different countries whilst he builds his practice, Mr. Khan becomes a key witness to many difficult and divisive periods of human cultural history, all the while trying to help others and make his own mark on the world. One of the most prominent and enjoyable features of this work for me was the level of engagement and enthusiasm that author Tariq Khan has with his readers, delivering segments from his life in the way that a close friend might relate anecdotes and memories from years gone by. This puts readers at ease from cover to cover of this fascinating book, and the more I read, the more engrossed I became in Mr. Khan’s unique writing style and the cultural nods to his home nation that still characterize his parlance today. Whilst the work is broadly historical and interesting to fellow medical students, it is also deeply personal and well balanced between these different aspects to deliver a perfect snapshot of a unique life that has been lived to the full thus far. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Looking-Glass Voyage to memoir fans everywhere.”
