According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, the number of adults in the United States who use social media sites has risen from 8% in 2005 to where it currently stands at 72% in 2013. That is an 800% gain in just 8 years. Facebook users alone have grown from 1 million at the beginning of 2005 to 1.1 billion by March 2013.

Contrary to many skeptics who believe that social media use is just a fad, this form of communication is here to stay. Although Facebook users may level off eventually or grow out of fashion, social media as a whole is going nowhere. It is now a fundamental form of communication with brands and businesses as well as people. Marketers, however, need to understand that they are not in control of this phenomenon — the consumer is behind the wheel.

Do not ever forget that customer relationship management is a two-way street. Marketers need to keep consumers engaged along this journey and speak with them, not at them. Provide them with the right content at the right time across all social media sites, new and old. It is up to you to know which social media networks your customers prefer and hang out at. Be active and engaged on these networks and stay that way.

Consistently monitor where your customers are, what they are saying and respond to their needs — not yours. Communicating with your target audience on these sites is imperative but it is just as important to listen to what they are saying. A marketer needs to be part of the group his/her customers are involved in.
