In an effort to push the Kindle Fire tablets into school systems across the country, Amazon has purchased elearning and online math instruction company, TenMarks. On Thursday, Amazon made the announcement but did not disclose the amount it has paid for the Burlingame, California based company. In a statement released at the announcement, Amazon Kindle vice president Dave Limp said, “Together, Amazon and TenMarks intend to develop rich educational content and applications, across multiple platforms, that we think teachers, parents and students will love.”
TenMarks has already made its mark and has been branded in the academic community. The company offers e-learning and online tailored math instruction for students from kindergarten through the 12th grade. Amazon has big plans for the company and says that TenMarks’ programs are already used in “tens of thousands” of schools around the country. Amazon’s Kindle unit is handling the acquisition and will be entering a segment of the tablet market where the Apple iPad already has a significant lead.
Purchasing TenMarks, however, gives the Kindle a quantum leap into making the tablet more attractive to elementary, middle and high schools as well as their students. The fact that the Kindle is also heavily into the book market does give it an advantage when textbooks start to become published in electronic formats. Once kids start using the Kindle for school, they are more likely to use it as they get older. The chances are they will bring it home where other family members will start using it as well.
