News Woman to Head News Partnerships at Twitter

NBC’s Vivian Schiller will act as liaison in newly created position

Twitter, which has been in the news lately in reference to its IPO and about its growing relationship with news agencies, has hired Vivian Schiller to run its newly created division of news partnerships. The move also dilutes the accusations, which have also been in the news, that the company is sexist; since all its members on the board of directors are men. A year ago, Schiller interviewed for an open spot on the board of directors, but was turned down.

However, Schiller is a newsworthy newswoman of both the New York Times as well as NPR and is leaving her current NBC News position of as chief digital officer. She will be managing partnerships with news organizations at Twitter and overseeing the department’s activities.

High-profile users such as the news media, sporting events and even movies on network television draw attention to Twitter, a real-time messaging service, which acts very similar to a news wire. Schiller herself has over 6,500 Twitter followers and will act as liaison between Twitter and the news industry.

Schiller announced the new job on Thursday when she Tweeted, “Excited to join @Twitter as Head of News in January. Leaving @NBCNews at year’s end. Grateful to my beloved colleagues for 2+ great years.”

The move comes as no surprise says Mike Isaac and Kara Swisher. “According to sources, VP of media Chloe Sladden and Twitter’s head of television Fred Graver were champions of Schiller throughout the long, drawn-out hiring process and were instrumental in picking her,” they said.
