MOSTRA Brazilian Film Series in Chicago from Oct. 30 – Nov. 17

The seventh annual edition of the MOSTRA Brazilian Film Series is bringing more than 20 award-winning films and eight filmmakers to Chicago and other Midwestern cities from Oct. 30 to Nov. 17.

The seventh annual edition of the MOSTRA Brazilian Film Series is bringing more than 20 award-winning films to Chicago from Oct. 30 to Nov. 17.

Eight Brazilian filmmakers will be in attendance to discuss their work in dynamic panels following select screenings. Inspired by the growing female participation in the Brazilian film industry, MOSTRA invited four women filmmakers to participate in discussions expected to focus on the role of women in the workplace.

“Hillary Clinton is getting closer to breaking the world’s highest glass ceiling, as her opponent and his supporters try to rationalize and normalize the denigration of women,” said MOSTRA Founder and Director Ariani Friedl. “The role of women in the workplace and as agents of change has never been a more relevant topic, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to add Brazilian voices to the discussion.”

In addition, Peppe Siffredi, director of Paratodosa documentary about Brazil’s top Paralympic athletes, will be present to address the growing movement for inclusion of the differently abled in Brazil. Noted director Sandra Kogut will be in attendance to receive this year’s MOSTRA Award on Closing Night, Nov. 17.

Admission to most MOSTRA screenings is free and open to the public, with the exception of the opening and closing nights, which are gala events bringing together the cream of Chicago’s Brazilian-American and film communities.

MOSTRA is an initiative of Partners of the Americas Illinois-São Paulo Chapter. Screenings and discussions are held in partnership with major institutions including the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Columbia College, The Old Town School of Folk Music, Second City and Facets Multimedia. In addition to Chicago, events will be held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Marian University in Indianapolis and Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

MOSTRA promotes a greater understanding between Brazil and the U.S.,” said Friedl. “It’s an opportunity for the public to experience  Brazil without leaving their theater seats.”
