AUSTIN, TX – 12/2/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — Hellas Construction was unanimously selected by the McAllen City Commission Monday night to build the new McAllen Youth Baseball Complex.  Hellas competed against five other companies for the contract to build the 11 baseball fields on 50 acres in McAllen, TX. Solid reputation earned Hellas the selection.

Mike Hernandez, Director of Parks and Recreation said, “Hellas has a great reputation. We looked all over the state and nationwide.”  He said, “We were very fortunate that Hellas was a part of the process.”  Hernandez said, “Hellas has the right experience and I am pleased with everyone I have met. They are great folks.”

Brian Parks, Business Development Manager for Hellas Construction said, “Hellas stands for Excellence and that is what customers are looking for.”  Hellas is the trusted provider of turf for the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium and their practice facility, The Star in Frisco, TX. “We already have two synthetic fields we installed in McAllen in 2015, McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium and Nicki Rowe football field,” Parks said. “We have been working on this baseball complex proposal for about 6 months and we are excited to have the opportunity to work with the city of McAllen on this very special community project,” Parks said.

A bond was passed back in 2013, but it has taken 3 years to secure the land and get the designs approved. “We had to go back to the drawing board a few times,” Hernandez said. “We outgrew our existing baseball parks,” he said. “No more playing games at 11 p.m. at night, just to fit in all the games,” Hernandez said. “We will finally have enough fields for all the teams to play at decent times,” Hernandez said.

“We currently don’t have the capacity to have large baseball tournaments and McAllen continues to grow at a steady pace. We are already a premier city for sports and retail attracting people from all over the Rio Grande Valley, neighboring cities and Mexico,” he said. “Sports tourism is really strong and continues to grow,” said Hernandez. “Competitions or tournaments that we host become international events because of our location. We are known for our hospitality,” he said. “Now we will be able to host large tournaments for baseball, instead of traveling to other cities,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez said there are plans for a Miracle field, but it was not included in this particular package. “We have groups currently raising money for the field for special needs kids,” he said. They also have future plans for 4 more fields that will be shared with the school district. They will break ground on the McAllen Youth Baseball Complex in early January 2017.
