10% Of Americans Have A Drug Abuse Disorder During Their Lifetimes

St George, UT – Based in Utah, the Renaissance Ranch, is a drug rehab center that offers its services to those suffering from drug abuse and the desire to get better. Many people view their 20s and early 30s as the peak of their life, but research has found it’s also commonly the peak of when drug addiction occurs. The researchers also learned that 20-somethings were most likely to seek out publicly funded local drug treatment options.

The spokesperson for Renaissance Ranch said, “Close to 10% of Americans have a drug abuse disorder during their lifetime, according to a new report. The study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, shows that 9.9% or more than 23.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with a drug use disorder (DUD). Many of them are untreated. The data comes from interviews with 36,309 adults who participated in a national survey between 2012 and 2013. The drug use disorders involved a variety of substances from marijuana and cocaine to hallucinogens and heroin. The study authors found that nearly 4% of Americans in the study received a diagnosis of a drug use disorder in the past 12 months and the percentage was greater for Americans diagnosed over their lifetime.”

The study also established that the disorders were more common among men, young unmarried adults, people with lower education and income, and white and Native American groups. People who abused alcohol and nicotine and those with mental health issues such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress were also more likely to report problems with drug abuse. From the statistics, there is clear proof that there is a worrying trend when it comes to substance abuse by Americans. There is a need to provide alcohol rehab centers, that can provide utmost care to addicts and guide them on their journey to sobriety.

As the saying goes, ‘Prevention is better than cure,’ many prevention approaches, such as selective prevention strategies, focus on helping individuals develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to make good choices or change harmful behaviors. Many of these strategies can be classroom-based. Universal prevention approaches include the use of environmental prevention strategies, which are tailored to local community characteristics and address the root causes of risky behaviors by creating environments that make it easier to act in healthy ways. The successful execution of these strategies often involves lawmakers, local officials, and community leaders, as well as the acceptance and active involvement of members from various sectors of the community such as business, faith, schools, and health.
