Podcasting originated as a method of communication between individuals and groups who used their iPods to record episodic or segmented series to share with each other and the world. Seizing upon the momentum created by podcasting, Apple included the ability to record and market podcasts on its iTunes platform with software update 4.9.

Within a year, many podcasts from public and private radio and television networks like CBS, NBC, National Public Radio, and others included their content on the iTunes platform. In addition, major local radio stations like WNYC in New York City and WHYY-FM radio in Philadelphia, KCRW in Los Angeles followed suit and placed their programs on their websites and later, on iTunes as well.

Podcasting has continued to gain popularity as an inexpensive and effective medium of communication.
