Designer Sells Handbags to Help Syrian Children

New York, New York – One year after launching her eponymous label, Minza Khan decided to design a handbag depicting the broken Syrian landscape and named it Children in Crisis. This year the 24-year-old designer will donate all proceeds from the sale of the Children in Crisis bag to UNICEF.

Minza launched her online store with twelve unique designs; including one to aid the Syrian crisis. The Syrian bag depicts Syrian landmarks, some of which date back to the 11th century. Due to the conflict, many of these historic landmarks have been destroyed in the past five years.  Khan will donate all proceeds from the sale of the bags to children in Syria through UNICEF.

“Many of the pieces in our line are inspired by eastern architecture,” Khan said. “Syria has some of the oldest churches and mosques in the world and it’s painful to see the destruction of these irreplaceable sites. Unfortunately, it is even more painful to see the destruction of human lives, especially those of children. We hope to raise awareness and fund a better future. We work for a more hopeful version of our world,” she added.

Before the launch of her brand, Khan decided women need quality handbags that are beyond ordinary. The brand is defined by its handmade bags and incorporates the ideals of social responsibility, luxury, and escapism. The embroidery is meticulously hand sewn by talented artisans in India. Khan deconstructs and redefines the boundaries of fashion aesthetics by combining classic western silhouettes with South Asian craftsmanship.

“I started drawing and designing from an early age,” Khan said. “I was born and raised in America by Pakistani parents so I appreciate the South Asian culture and handicraft. I incorporate the beautiful ancient techniques into our handbags.”

To preserve the character of each design, Khan produces limited quantities of each style. The brand’s signature elements include mirror-work, pearls, crystals, velvet lining, and the ancient technique of metallic thread embroidery known as zardozi.

“I focus on small details and I truly believe that each bag is a piece of art,” Khan said. “At the same time, our concept is an affordable luxury. We want our products to be affordable but without compromising beauty or quality.”

Minza handbags are currently available online and provide free shipping on domestic orders.
