The Global Illuminated Retractors Market is anticipated to grow and reach USD 29.38 million by 2024, according to the report published by RBM Research. Rising needs to transform minimally invasive and minimal access surgeries among the surgeons has risen the demand for illuminated retractors. This has driven the overall industry in recent past and is expected to continue the same trend over the forecast period.

One of the advanced surgical option for treatment of breast cancer is Nipple Sparing Mastectomy (NSP). It has become a popular treatment choice owing to increased desire by both patients and surgeons to achieve an improved aesthetic outcome after breast cancer surgery. However, still this procedure can be technically challenging for surgeons, and patient selection is a critical factor. Recent improvements in intra cavity illumination and visualization technology reduced surgical challenges and potential complications of NSM.

Surgeons believed that Eikon Illuminated Retractor system with integrated Intelligent Photonics overcomes the primary challenge of visualization when performing NSM. Surgeons believed that it improved their surgical efficiency and their surgical time. In addition, 92% reported that it increased their success in maintaining flap and nipple integrity and improved patient safety, and therefore improved patient experience.

Invuity, Inc. which is an advanced medical technology company has introduced Eikon LT illuminated retractor system which can improve intra-cavity illumination and visualization. Eikon LT integrates Invuity’s Intelligent Photonics technology that enable minimally invasive and minimal access open surgeries, including general surgery, thyroid oncology , general surgery and breast oncology and reconstruction.

It has been showcased in American College of surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress that Eikon LT system expands the existing Eikon platform and provides surgical precision, safety and efficiency. The Eikon Retractor coupled with Eigr Waveguide provides illumination and visualization deep inside the surgical cavity.

Medical Device Safety Reports has reported that there has been fires in hospitals ignited by fiberoptic illumination systems during arthoscopic surgery. In one case, the fiber optic cable was disconnected from the arthroscope and placed on the surgical drapes with the xenon light source activated. The high-intensity output from the cable ignited the cloth drapes, causing a smoldering fire with considerable smoke. Luckily, elevated oxygen and nitrous oxide levels were not present as they must be near the patient’s head during anesthesia. In a second incident, the disconnected fiberoptic cable ignited disposable nonwoven surgical paper drapes that had trapped a pocket of oxygen. The resulting flash fire burned the patient’s leg.

OBP Medical’s ONETRAC is a single-use cordless surgical retractor with integrated LED light source and smoke evacuation channel. Such a ready-to use device eliminates the time and expense related to reprocessing and reduces the risk of cross-contamination in the surgical setting by making reusable devices and fiber-optic light cables obsolete. Illumination in the depth of surgical tissue pocket or cavity can now be met within seconds. Ideally, they are best suited for breast and reconstructive procedures as well as surgical procedures that require illumination, access and retraction of soft tissue.

North America illuminated retractors market is expected to reach above 1.0 million by 2024 as traditional lighting sources are inadequate when surgeons operate through small incisions used in the anterior approach to cervical discectomy, corpectomy and fusion. Illumination technology gives appropriate visualization of the surgical target and therefore, brings best outcomes for patients.

The overall market is niche in nature and has a presence of both regional and international players. Some of the market participants include Stryker Surgical, Invuity Inc., Medline Industries Inc., Lumitex Inc. and Samarth Surgical Industries.
