”To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is one of the great literary masterpieces that immortalizes southern life before the advent of civil rights. This beloved classic became an Academy Award winning film that has touched countless lives and made the actors cherished celebrities. Among the few surviving members of the cast is Mary Badham who played Scout in the film. Ms. Badham continues to travel the country speaking about her personal experiences as well as the profound lessons of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Almost every audience who hears Ms. Badham speak walks away enormously touched by her insights into prejudice, racism and intolerance. While many thousands have had the privilege to hear her speak, many more under-served schools have wanted to but been unable to secure her as a speaker. A new campaign on Indiegogo is attempting to raise $35,500, which would allow Ms. Badham to speak at ten of these schools.
While Ms. Badham greatly enjoys the honor of speaking to high school and college students, travel and accommodations costs necessitate an honorarium for her services. Most schools lack the financial resources to engage Ms. Badham, but with the help of generous supporters, many more youths can experience firsthand how much ”To Kill a Mockingbird” affected a generation and put on display to the world the ugly face of racism.
This crowdfunding campaign utilizes a fixed funding goal so pledges will only be honored if the entire $35,500 goal is met. In return for making a financial pledge, supporters may receive valuable perks like autographed photos, T-shirts, copies of ”To Kill a Mockingbird” book, personalized thank you notes, or even a dinner with Mary Badham.
