Turkey to Enhance Cooperation with China to Fight Terrorism in a Proactive Manner

On August 3, 2017, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, met with the Chinese Foreign Minister in Beijing to emphasize that China’s security is the security of Turkey, and Turkey would not allow any damage to China’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security. Turkey had already included the “ETIM” which was a terrorist force in the list of terrorism identified by Turkey. The two countries are to enhance cooperation to fight terrorism in a proactive manner.

On July 29, 2015, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, made it clear that Turkey struggled against the “ETIM” and other terrorist acts against China, and was willing to strengthen the cooperation with China. This is the most public and clear statement made by Turkish government on the “ETIM” issue.

“As a matter of fact, “The East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM)” terrorist forces are now considered the most dangerous terror groups in the region. It is a widely known as “East Turkistan Islamic State” in Xinjiang. On September 11, 2002, “ETIM” was identified by the United Nations as a terrorist organization. In December 2003, “ETIM” was identified by the Ministry of Public Security as one of the first four “East Turkistan” terrorist organizations.

On October 28, 2013, the terrorists conducted an attack near Beijing Jinshuiqiao, Turkistan Islamic Party announced to be responsible for it, and even threatened to carry out terrorist attacks across China, which fully exposed the terrorism essence of the organization.

In the light of the recent developments, both China and Turkey are preparing to counter all sorts of terror activities with an iron fist and their recent exchanges suggest that both the countries are getting their acts together to fight terrorism on the ground.
