““Plaza’s ability to achieve this early date was a result of the firm’s strong partnership with the Pioneer Valley Building Trades Council (PVBTC) and local subcontracting community,” said Alan Sparn Vice President, Project Executive for Plaza Construction”
CRRC MA continues on time with the construction of its first North American rail car manufacturing facility on Page Boulevard in Springfield, Massachusetts. CRRC MA’s construction contractor, Plaza Construction achieved a significant milestone at the CRRC MA Railcar Assembly Facility in Springfield Massachusetts, by receiving a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) forty-five days ahead of schedule on June 30, 2017.

Plaza Construction served as the Design Builder for the Springfield, MA CRRC project, overseeing design, construction of the facility, and site and equipment installation.

“Early access to the facility is a significant milestone for CRRC MA,” said CRRC MA Vice President Jia Bo.  “Installation of the assembly equipment is underway and we remain on schedule to begin rail car assembly early 2018.”

The continuing momentum of the project ahead of schedule is a result of a strong commitment from all members of the project team to coordinate building and equipment requirements, select an experienced design team, partner with the local contractors to bring skilled labor to the project, and working closely with the City of Springfield for the permitting and occupancy approvals required.

“Plaza’s ability to achieve this early date was a result of the firm’s strong partnership with the Pioneer Valley Building Trades Council (PVBTC) and local subcontracting community,” said Alan Sparn Vice President, Project Executive for Plaza Construction.

Assembly equipment began arriving mid-June and over the next 60 days several large pieces of equipment will arrive and be installed including the one hundred foot long Traverse Table, used to move the railcars through the assembly process, the Traction Power Substation (TPSS) which will power the quarter mile long test track, and the Bogie Assembly Equipment used in the assembly of the railcar undercarriages.  With the assembly floor complete, final finishes in the building and site and track work will be completed.

CRRC (China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation) is the world’s largest Railway Transportation Equipment and Service Provider, providing all types of railway vehicles, machinery, and new energy products.  CRRC MA, the corporation’s first North American company was established to expand the company’s U.S. footprint, and in 2014, was awarded from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), its first contract to design and manufacture Boston’s transit a brand new, state-of-the-art, vehicle.

The establishment of an in-state, 204,000 SF rail car manufacturing facility, equipped with a 2,240 foot test track, will be CRRC MA’s hub to assemble 404 subway cars for the MBTA, and vehicle assembly for recently awarded contracts from Los Angeles Metro and Philadelphia’s SEPTA.  With assembly of MBTA vehicles at the Massachusetts plant to begin spring 2018 and other contracts soon to follow, a steady stream of manufacturing work will be realized at CRRC MA’s facility.  By 2020, CRRC MA’s manufacturing facility will be at peak capacity with continuous work through the decade.

Construction commenced in March 2016, with facility completion scheduled for fall 2017. Rail car final assembly at the new plant will begin spring of 2018 with the first production cars completed in December, 2018.  All production vehicles will be assembled and tested in the CRRC Rail Car Assembly Facility.
