Los Angeles, CA – May 23, 2018 –
Edith Stein “determines the salvation of a life and the hope for a new future,” NewsCinema IT’s Davide Sette on ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’.
Writer-Director Joshua Sinclair’s (‘Jump’, ‘Judgment in Berlin’, ‘Shake Zulu’) biopic love story, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ is a “moving and symbolic” (Sette), re-telling of history’s most compelling women in Judeo-Christian history, Edith Stein –the champion of feminism, Carmelite nun, German Jew and canonized saint. Recently screened for buyers at this year’s Cannes Marché Du Film with representation of ROCK SALT RELEASING, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ showcases inspiring strength and independence behind Stein’s life, as well as her extraordinary, courageous quest for survival as fervid advocate for women’s rights despite caught in the midst of World War II’s extreme bloodshed, time of hatred and intense cruelty.
As the first and only Jewish patron saint of Europe, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ displays Stein’s loyalty by unwilling to flee from Hitler’s death machine and instead, choosing the path to remain in Germany, united with “her people” as she courageously challenged the Nazi regime. Rooted in the exploration of a Judeo-Christian relationship, Stein’s story highlights the interdependence of different religions, as well as the necessity of having interfaith dialogues. Sinclair is able to preserve Stein’s life and legacy as “a character with a strong determination, whose days are punctuated by prayer, teaching, personal study and sweet everyday moments with her students” and beyond, “determines the salvation of a life and the hope for a new future,” glistened Sette.
Noted for its breathtaking cinematography by Italian legend and master of light Vittorio Storaro, who captures ‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ in a “composing, visually striking” way, similar to his wonderful and extensive filmography, from ‘Apocalypse Now’ to ‘Last Tango in Paris’. As “a true scholar of the ‘meaning’ of colors”, Storaro signifies how “lights and colors assume an importance that goes well beyond the aesthetic aspect, inserting itself into the process to emphasize the emotions of the protagonists or the particular tone of a scene,” wrote Sette. He added, “But that of Joshua Sinclair is a film that suddenly jumps from one place to another, which takes the narrative back in a precise historical period to abandon it soon after for a flashback or a flash-forward. This fragmentation of the story is accompanied by a variety in visual style that alternates warm and enveloping lights with cold and aseptic blue, allowing even some digression in black and white.”
‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ is a significant and extraordinary tale recounting Stein’s life as a controversial woman, trying to reconcile the conflictions between the Jews and Christians, fighting fiercely until her eventual martyrdom in Auschwitz and becoming one of the most important heroines in Judeo-Christian history.
‘A ROSE IN WINTER’ has a spectacular, handpicked cast and crew, with a combination of talented newcomers and silver-screen legends, including the iconic Italian editor Roberto Perpignani (‘Il Postino’, ‘Ceaser Must Die’, ‘Last Tango In Paris’) and internationally celebrated composer Franco Piersanti (‘The Caiman’, ‘Terraferma’, ‘Me and You’, ‘We Have a Pope’). Alongside is Zana Marjanovic as the lead of Edith Stein, who previously led the world’s interest in Angelina Jolie’s ‘In The Land of Blood and Honey’ (2011) and ‘Broken’. Alongside, the film features award-winner producer for short ‘Edith’ and actor, Christian Cookie (‘Love, Rosie’, ‘Cemetery Junction’, ‘Romeo & Juliet’), five-time winner Ken Duken (‘Inglourious Basterds’, ‘Temple’), Anja Kruse (‘The Beautiful Wilhelmine’, ‘Forsthaus Falkenau’, ‘Barbara Wood – Game of Fate’) and multi-award actor and director, Karl Markovics (‘The Counterfeiters’, ‘Breathing’, ‘Superwelt’).
