WhoGivesMore? Energizes Charitable Giving by Introducing the Element of Competition

Americans have long been some of the most generous people in the world. In the aftermath of major catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina, the people of this country opened their hearts and wallets to help the victims.  While Americans are more than willing to help people who are in the media spotlight, it can be difficult to sustain that charitable spirit. However, a new group has devised a powerful way to encourage people to give to non-profits. WhoGivesMore? is an organization that has developed a platform to encourage giving by adding a competitive component.

Based on humanity’s natural instinct to outperform others, this new platform from WhoGivesMore? allows users to join a group which is in some way similar to their identity and then donate to a charity of their choice. WhoGivesMore? will constantly tally the amount each group gives, providing a metric for each group to surpass. The individuals and groups that lead in giving will earn badges, social media honors and other distinctions. These groups will be defined by important characteristics like political affiliation, religion or geographical location.

Unlike many charitable groups which must beg for donations, WhoGivesMore? encourages users to give which can then be used to improve the standing of their groups. In addition to a radically different fundraising model, WhoGivesMore? also offers a much more efficient fundraising system. While even the most trustworthy fundraising operations have to charge nearly 10 percent of all received donations to cover expenses and processing, WhoGivesMore? plans to lower these expenses by allowing outside organizations to sponsor teams and competitions.

While this revolutionary new charitable giving model is likely to reshape how fundraising operates, it is still in development.  WhoGivesMore? requires the financial support of the public to implement its idea and produce a website. In order to raise the $75,000 needed to complete Phase I of development, the WhoGivesMore? team has sponsored a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. In return for your generous support, you may receive perks like special badges, Facebook mentions, or interviews with the WhoGivesMore? team. With your help, thousands of worthy charities could see their coffers fill starting in late 2014.
