A long time ago…
Once upon a time there was a hairy monster. The monster was clever because you never knew where it might appear. It would hide in secret man places and only appear when you least expected. It would appear anywhere, but especially in places to make you feel embarrassed. The Hairy Monster loved embarrassing people, that was its job. To sprout in places men didn’t want it to appear.
But one day came a brave and beautiful Princess. She knew all the Hairy Monsters secrets because of a special spell she had been given by her wise Great Grandmother. “Don’t let the Hairy Monster get you dear child”, she said. “You will find in the 21st Century new ways to kill the monster.”
The Princess is now Queen, loved by a vast devotional people. She attends banquets and dances but has noticed her Prince looks very unhappy. She knew the Hairy Monster had got to him. She was very upset and started to cry; until she remembered the words of her Great-Grandmother and the special spell she’d been given. Being a clever Queen, she knew how to work computers and she went online to find out how to kill the Hairy Monster growing on her handsome Prince.
She searched for a very long time until she finally found something called Laser Hair Removal.
The Queen was fascinated and started to learn how Laser hair removal actually works. She read how the light of the laser beam can be converted to heat. The light is attracted to the pigment (melanin) in the hair. Dark pigment absorbs the light and the converts it to heat. The heat then affects the hair follicles to prevent hair growth.
In order to destroy a hair follicle, the bulb of the hair follicle where the blood supplies the hair with oxygen to grow needs to be destroyed as well as the stem cells which are responsible for hair regeneration. To be able to do this, a temperature of about 70 degrees needs to be reached.
“Gosh”, thought the Queen. She wondered how long the treatment would last on him. She discovered there are 3 main factors that can affect whether or not you can achieve permanent hair removal.
Only hairs in the growing stage can be treated successful but not all hairs grow at the same time. For example, at any one given time on our body, only about 20-40% of hair is growing, the others are either in a transition or resting.
Secondly, only hair that has pigment can be treated. The thicker and darker the hair, the more pigment it contains, which means the light will be absorbed, convert to heat and reach a temperature of about 70 degrees, and therefore destroy the root of the hair. If this temperature isn’t reached, the treatment will only damage the hair which will result in lighter finer hairs growing back. In this case the hair follicle will not be effectively destroyed.
And the third factor is skin colour. The darker and the thicker the hair, the more pigment it will hold, and the more light it will absorb. This is why it is important that you don’t wax or pluck your hair before a treatment, because if there is no hair there, there is no way for the laser light to treat that hair follicle.
“How amazing”, thought the Queen as she prepared to make an appointment for the Prince with a specialist the very next day.
And of course, they lived happily ever after.
