The Lady Cross-Country Redhawks at Mountain Empire High School had an amazing 2017, with the team finishing with 69 points at the CIF Finals for San Diego County, 10 points ahead of the favorite to win Division 5, The Francis Parker School. Pack running was the key to the team’s success. Redhawks #4 runner, Brenna Rowley, was only 4 places and 6 seconds behind our #1 runner, Reese Schuler, with Grace Laskey only 11 places and 31 seconds behind our #1 runner — creating an incredibly tight pack. Sophomore Reese Schuler, who made the Division 5 all-CIF team with her 10th place finish, was our top runner.
The team was highly motivated to make it back to the state finals in Fresno, California after failing to qualify in 2016 by two points. Going back to state was the motivation behind the whole season, and the girls of Mountain Empire’s Cross-Country trained hard, even during breaks, to realize their goal. MEHS Girls’ Cross- Country coach Bill Leblanc said to the team’s credit, “To be honest, we never expected to win the division because we were never ranked above third place during the season, but I told the kids not to give the rankings much credence because we rarely face the schools in town in head-to-head competition so the rankings are not always that meaningful. We have often outperformed our rankings over the years.”
Another season highlight was completing an undefeated season in the Citrus League competition and winning the league finals with a score of 20 points. Using their success of the past, the Redhawks once again pack ran and the top 5 Mountain Empire runners finished 2nd through 6th with a time spread of only 38 seconds between the 1st and 5th runners.
The Mountain Empire High School Girls Cross-Country team has big plans for the 2018-19 season! Their goals are to be undefeated league champions once again and to make it to the state finals as a team.
