Victorica Falls by Deborah Carr is a beautifully written young adult fantasy, a tale of an apprentice and a threat that could end her journey to becoming a Serving Mage even before it’s started. Linden is the daughter of powerful parents, with a father who is a war hero and a mother who is the provincial governor, but Linden doesn’t seem to be doing well in school, failing in all her subjects. But when their home and school are attacked by raiders from the border, she moves to live with her grandmother in the capital. Her grandmother is determined to transform Linden into the Serving Mage she is meant to be. While she creates new relationships and begins to learn to cope with her new setting, Linden also makes the disturbing discovery that the attack at Victorica could be more than what it seemed. In fact, it could have been an attack on her life. Now she has to choose whether to face it or run.
This novel is deliciously entertaining, well written, and featuring complex characters. The author focuses on the emotional and human growth of the heroine and puts her through a conflict that shapes her personality in ways readers will enjoy. Deborah Carr develops her characters deftly, stylishly, and with depth and heart. The writing is gorgeous and the entire narrative is filled with drama and action. Linden is an unusual character, an apprentice who learns a lot by facing adversity rather than in the classroom. But what is her destiny? Readers will enjoy the mystery as the story unfolds. There are surprises in the plot, intense and deeply emotional moments, but what makes Victorica Falls an enjoyable read is that the author keeps it real and focused.”
