“Division 19”, an award-winning science-fiction film that walked away with top statues at the Fantasporto and Boston Science Fiction film festivals, will receive a wide theatrical release next month from Uncork’d Entertainment.
The film, starring Linus Roache and Alison Doody, will also get a digital release.
In the future, prisons have been turned into online portals where paying subscribers get to vote on what felons eat, watch, wear and who they fight. Panopticon TV is so successful it is about to be rolled out to a whole new town. When the world’s most downloaded felon escapes, the authorities set a trap to reel him in. The bait is his little brother who has so far managed to avoid detection.
Writer-director S.A Halewood tells Blasting News she got the idea from an invention that a company in the UK came up with.
“At the time of writing when Tony Blair was in power (and still thinks he is) the UK was the third most watched country on earth after Russia and China. Civil liberties were about to be eroded further with the introduction of bio-passports and a dubious company VeriCool was offering RFID chips for your school kids under the auspices that this way, all kids would appear equal (financially) as credits for school dinners would be via RFID chip and no keep would need to pay with vouchers.”
“Schools were ‘informed’ this was the direction they were going in, and many parents liked the idea of having their kids chipped so they could be monitored in case of disappearance. The problem was that these kids would be monitored for other things – behavior etc. – mainly for marketing purposes but also for criminal tendencies. The aim of the film was to show two options of the future; one where we do nothing and end up being scrutinized in what would effectively be a gargantuan jail (of our making) as per the Hardin Jones story and two; fight back and change The System as per the Parkour Kids.”
Also starring Jamie Draven (Billy Elliot), Lotte Verbeek (“Outlander”), Clarke Peters (“Jessica Jones”), L. Scott Caldwell (“Lost”) and Will Rothhaar (“Grimm”), “Division 19” is written and directed by S A Halewood.
“Division 19″ in theaters and available on demand from April 5.
